Wayne County received its name from the Revolutionary War hero, General Anthony Wayne. The county seat, Waynesboro is also named after General Wayne.
Wayne County has many industries from the energy sector to forest products. Clarke Oil Company, Johnson Oil Company, Hood Industries, Quality Plywood, Scotch Plywood, Kelley Companies and Southern Mississippi Trading Group are located in the county. Hood Industries and Scotch Plywood purchase pine sawtimber from private landowners in South Mississippi.
Wayne County offers many recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Maynor Creek Water Park is a 450-acre site that offers rustic cabins for rent, boating, and excellent fishing. A large percentage of the Desoto National Forest is located in the county. The national forest offers a very diverse ecosystem and focuses on the perpetuation of the native species longleaf pine. There is no fee for hunting on the forest service lands. Waynesboro has a very good public golf course.
